Fujitsu is a proud sponsor of SME Survey since 2009, we would like to share some insight with SMEs in South Africa and will be regularly updating this web page with news to keep you informed about technology and how to make it an enabler in your business during these difficult times.

Notebook computers have become far more prevalent in the marketplace over the last few years. Increased sales volumes have impacted favourably on prices and the pricing gap between notebooks and personal computers has narrowed considerably. Remember however that there are features and benefits to both notebooks and personal computers and that, subject to specification, you will derive different performance aspects from each machine.

Amongst the most important features of a notebook computer are its portability/mobility, and connectivity. Most modern notebooks have wireless connectivity (W/LAN) built into the machine. This allows you to connect to a wireless network/hotspot, when you are on the go. The introduction of 3G connectivity, which is essentially connectivity to the GSM (cellular) network, allows a greater amount of freedom as the coverage is so much broader than that of a wireless LAN.

A feature that we offer on several of our Fujitsu notebooks is built-in UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System), which, in conjunction with a mobile network SIM card, enables you to connect to 3G and 3G HSDPA/HSUPA broadband networks without attaching external cards, or USB devices to your notebooks. This is a bonus for mobile users as they then do not have the requirement of carrying additional devices.

We have developed the following cartoon to show our definition of UMTS to assist the end user:

With the SIM card installed in the notebook, you never need to worry about setting up your 3G connection wherever you are. And we were the pioneers of the HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) UMTS device, which means that you can connect at the highest speed your network offers (subject to signal strength and availability) when you are on the move.

The benefits of UMTS are listed below:
  • Better performance and higher antenna sensitivity
  • Lower power consumption and prolongs battery life
  • SIM Card located behind battery pack hence SIM card harder to loose or steal
  • Nothing sticking out from your notebook which means convenience when packing
  • Reliability (mechanically and connector wise)

This is just another technological enhancement developed by Fujitsu to ensure an enhanced user experience.
