Fujitsu: a brief history

Fujitsu’s history shows parallels to its former joint venture partner, the Siemens Group, and both companies have travelled a long road together. Fujitsu’s started in 1935 with the foundation of Fuji Tsūshinki Seizō, a joint venture between an offshoot of the communications division of the Fuji Electric Company and Siemens. The purpose of the new company was the production of telecommunications accessories. From 1945, the company also produced tele-phones and the first computers as early as in 1952. 1952 also marked the year in which the company resumed its collaboration with Siemens, which had ceased in 1945. In 1960, Fujitsu started producing the first transistors and six years later the first integrated circuits followed. In 1967, Fuji Tsūshinki Seizō was formally renamed into Fujitsu Limited. Seven years later, in 1974, Fujitsu announced the first development of IBM-compatible mainframes based on LSI and multi-layered printed circuit boards. A machine developed jointly by Amdahl and Fujitsu in 1975 prevailed against an IBM product for a NASA project. This was a major success.

In 1999, this long lasting partnership culminated in the foundation of another joint venture: Fujitsu Siemens Computers. When Fujitsu announced it would take over 100 percent of Fujitsu Siemens Computers as of April 2009, the company had already made major steps towards global IT leadership.
